Personalized skin care products are still based on trial and error – it’s the same as what you are doing now. They send you a formula and you tell them if it works or not, and if it doesn’t they’ll send you a new one. Same as you buying a product and if it doesn’t work – you try a new one. The difference is that these companies are also gathering your data – which is worth a lot of money. Essentially, you pay twice: with cash for a product and with your data.
No one has yet figured out how to solve The Skin Affinity Problem – that means matching ingredients to each individuals’ skin. That is because skin – being your largest organ, is heavily influenced on various factors including genetics, environment, seasons, UV exposure, sleep, hormones, skin care routine, allergens, etc.
I’ve been in the beauty industry for over 7 years and formulated 60+ beauty products and skin/hair supplements. I’ve also designed machine learning algorithms to personalize facial skincare products and supplements at MIT.
There are a lot of good products, brands, and formulas out there in the market already. The key is in identifying ingredients and existing formulations that could work for your skin and the possible combinations of products for your skin routine.
